The purpose of this essay is to reveal the central distinctive elements of Jürgen Habermas’ theory of discourse ethics and how his moral theory differs from those of two other prominent philosophers, Immanuel Kant and John Rawls. The middle sections are committed to (1) a discussion of his early work, notably on the structural transformation of the public sphere and crises of legitimation; (2) a critical exegesis of his later philosophy and sociology of modernity, culminating in the ‘de-coupling’ of lifeworld and system that underpins his theory of communicative action; and (3) an examination of the extension of The Critical Theory of Jurgen Habermas Jurgen Habermas is widely considered as the most influential thinker in Germany over the past decade [1970-80]. During 1970’s to 80’s, Habermas modified his earlier concept of critical social theory and termed it as the Theory of Communicative Action. In this theory, Habermas discussed two thoughts, one that was based on communicative competence and communicative rationality and the second thought was based on distorted communication. The theory put forward here is derived from the Habermas ficritical theory.fl It suggests that information systems which are designed to increase organizational effectiveness must also increase human understanding and emancipate people from undesirable social and physical constraints, distorted communication and misapplied power.
